I just had to take a deep breath before I started this post. Why? I’m not even sure where to begin with this book. I think it’s already been established that I’m probably Colleen Hoover’s biggest fan. I will literally read anything that she writes, because everything she writes is absolute gold. (She is, without a doubt, my personal publishing hero.) This book was no exception. In fact, this might just be my favorite that she’s written so far.
In the Slammed series, my thought process throughout every single book was something along the lines of “Why isn’t Will Cooper real and in my life?!?” I felt a little bit less attached with Holder in Hopeless, and I’m not sure why. Losing Hope completely turned it around for me.
The entire book is Hopeless, but from Holder’s perspective, instead of Sky’s.
Now, you might think that’s a bit redundant, but if you’ve read Hopeless, you know that Dean Holder is a complete enigma. (Colleen herself actually described Holder as such in this post.) So really, getting the entire side of the story from his perspective helps you understand why he reacted to things the way that he did, when we couldn’t possibly know before because we were experiencing everything along with Sky in the first book.
I’ve always been a bigger fan of books written from the perspective of the female lead character rather than the male lead character, but this book completely changed my mind. Ironically, one night last week, I woke up, grabbed my Ignition notebook where I have parts of the story written down, and wrote 14 pages from Dean’s perspective instead of Lauren’s. (No, I didn’t copy Colleen with the name Dean, I had planned Ignition long before I read Hopeless. Besides, Dean Holder hates his name and goes by Holder anyway, so it all works out.) I’ve literally never written anything from Charlie or Aric’s (in Skyfall and Equilibrium respectively) perspectives, so it was really weird for me, and I wasn’t sure how I could include that in the book, even though it gave more depth into what was happening in the story. Losing Hope ironically gave me a lot of hope about that scenario, so I’m feeling a lot better about it now, and I’m actually really excited to see how I can integrate that later on.
Back to Losing Hope.
It’s a must read in my opinion. I wish that it went on forever, because I never want to stop reading it. In fact, I could literally go on about it forever, but in the interest of everyone’s sanity, I’ll just say GO OUT AND READ IT! (Well, read Hopeless first if you haven’t read it, but THEN GO GET IT!)
